Chapter Twelve

As she tossed the clean bedding to the back of the stall, the smile still hadn’t faded from Tatum’s face. She hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Blake, and the shower yesterday. He’d been quite simply amazing.

In fact, everything seemed to be going right lately—this morning she’d been been trotting Stargazer back for his washdown after another brisk early morning run, and Tom had told her she was doing a fine job with the colt, to keep up the good work. She still felt as if she were floating on air after the compliment.

The colt’s progress over the weeks had been nothing short of astounding. And with their regular practise sessions under Tom’s watchful eye, Stargazer had been putting in some really blistering times lately.

To her amazement, the logistics of exercising Stargazer without Blake’s knowledge, hadn’t turned out to be that difficult. He was frequently away with races all over the country, and whenever he was around, Tom would simply shuffle exercise riders around and she’d stay on stablehand duties for the day.

“Look out.” Richie’s head popped up over the stall gate, jolting her from her thoughts. “Generalissima’s coming and she’s on the warpath!”

“What?” Tatum looked up in surprise.

Stargazer nickered at the sudden commotion and Tatum extended a hand absently, calmed the skittish colt. “It’s okay, you’re okay mister.” She leaned on the fork she’d just embedded in the hay bail. “Richie, what are you talking about? Who’s on the warpath?”

“Sorry. Can’t stop and talk.” He said, already striding away. “If she catches me slacking off, there’ll be hell to pay. Just keep your head down is all I’m sayin’.”

Huh. That was odd, Tatum thought to herself. And she could have sworn Richie had been wearing a headset just now. She stuck her head out over the stall gate and watched him striding down Stable Lane and disappear from view. He’d been holding a clipboard too. What in the world was Richie doing with a headset and a clipboard, she wondered.

“Tatum!” Laura called, approaching from the other direction. “Are you free? I could use a hand.”

Laura seemed to be back to her old self, Tatum noted wryly. “Um, sure. I should probably finish up—” Tatum’s gaze flicked to the soiled hay still waiting to be cleaned up.

“It’ll keep.” Laura said, whirling around. “You can finish up later, right now, it’s all hands on deck. Come on. I’ll explain as we walk. The proverbial’s hit the fan” She went on. “Because the darn—“

“Oh, sorry,” Tatum broke in, realizing with a jolt she’d left the pitch fork in Stargazer’s stall. “I ah, left something behind. I’ll catch up with you.”

“Okay—don’t be long.” Laura called, striding away.

Dashing back to the stall, Tatum heaved the pitch fork from the hay and replaced it on a hook outside the stall. That could have been an absolute disaster if Stargazer had injured himself. She had to be more careful next time—no matter who asked her to help out or how mad they looked.

Not seeing any sign of Laura anywhere, Tatum hurried off in the direction she’d gone in.
